Do You Really Need Another Vintage Thermos?

Published by Pam Kessler | 463 words. · About 3 minutes to read this article. - 23 Comments

Woo hoo! This girl got a little shoppin' in this weekend and I'm feeling good!

I don't know about you, but if I go too long without getting out to a good sale or thrift store, I start to get a little antsy. A little twitchy even.

But no worries, I got my groove on at a barn sale. And all is right with the world.

    Look what I found!!!

Vintage Skotch Kooler - found at a barn sale

    It's a Skotch Kooler.

I've seen a few of these at flea markets and yard sales, but they were always beaten up and rusty. This one is in next to mint condition, so I grabbed it up.

Can't you just picture this holding a Christmas tree in a few weeks!!!

A bonus of buying this cooler is that when I got it home I found this vintage Thermos stowed away in it.

It doesn't match the cooler exactly and it's a Thermos brand instead of a Skotch Kooler brand. But hey, it's almost like I got a free Thermos.

And that, in my book, is a good day!

I also bought this wood casing that came from the top an old door frame.

Wood casing from an old farmhouse door frame

When I was walking into the barn sale, Kimm from Reinvented was walking out.

She had a piece of wood in her hands (not like this one, but similar) and mentioned that she might hang it on the wall over a door or window in her house since her house was newer and didn't have casings around the windows (same here).

So when I saw a bin of these at the sale, I immediately stole her idea.

Jadeite bowls? Not sure. They're NOT marked Fire King on the bottom, so I'm skeptical.

Do any of the Pyrex, Fire King, vintage dinnerware lovers out there know for sure?

I found this vintage Redmon style picnic basket in the 99 cent bin at the thrift. I do not need another picnic basket, but for 99 cents . . .

And at the same thrift I found this head.

I think it's used for hairdressers to learn how to do hair?

Now, when I bought it, I immediately thought of using her for Halloween decor. I was going to get all gruesome with it, using lots of blood and such. But she sort of grew on me and I didn't want to permanently mess her up.

So instead of using it for a ghoulish Halloween scene, I dressed her up with a Halloween hat from Target and a plaid scarf and she went from horrifying and dark to sort of darling and oh so sophisticated.

So now that all is right in my neck of the woods, did you get a chance to get out and get your thrift on? What'd you buy?

I collect vintage jadeite glass and haven't seen your bowl before, so I did a quick google search. I found a set of 3 bowls like yours made by Gibson (newer) that sold on etsy for $45. Good score for you! Now if I could just find a plaid cooler...

Fire King ALWAYS marked their stuff with the Fire King name, my mom and me both collect Fire King. As a wedding present my Aunts got me a 5 piece place setting for 10 people in the Fire King Peach Luster design along with mixing bowls, casserole dishes, etc.

That is the cooler we had growing up - I am afraid my mother sold it years ago at a garage sale. Great finds.

I love your finds. The cooler is great. I get a little antsy and twitchy, too. Haven't went out for a week and I am itching to go. Maybe tomorrow. Have a great week and of course, you need another thermos.

Wow, Pam, you sure hit the jackpost this week! Whether or not the bowls are the real thing, they're sure to look smashing somewhere in your house. And of course I'm loving your hairdresser's head!

When you find a picnic basket that is 99 cents, you have to buy it. If you don't, the picnic basket gods will strike down on you and not allow you to ever find another picnic basket again. I read it in the Thrifting Rules book.

Your finds are amazing, Pam. I am very envious of your cooler. Maybe one day I'll find one, too. I'm glad someone found out about the jadeite bowls...they were a mystery to me. I'm one the way to pin your cooler to my Plaid aPlenty board.......

I'm the same way, gotta get out there on a regular basis and get my thrift on! I actually picked up that exact Skotch cooler about 2 years ago in Goodwill for a couple bucks (Although mine did not have a thermos in it!) I used it as a base for a white feather Christmas tree. They really are the best around Christmastime!

I definitely need to go shopping!! Funny thing is that I was just mentioning to the Hubs that we need a good old fashioned thermos to take out to the beach. I love that Skotch cooler and I DO think it's going to look great with a Xmas tree inside. You've got the best ideas Pam.
