    Thrifting In My Hood

Published by Pam Kessler | 649 words. · About 4 minutes to read this article. - 16 Comments

If the hood means what I think it does. Otherwise I look like your Grandma who uses the word "groovy" way too much.

    While out thifting this week I did find some groovy . . . cool . . . rad . . . super exciting things.

Like this Thermos brand Icy Hot thermos. I loved the color and the mid-century modern geometric pattern on it.

    And the price (90 cents).

The only problem is it looks like a car ran over it. LOTS of dents and some scratches, but you know what? It's hard to get through life without a few dings in you.

Besides, did I mention the price? It will be great to stick some flag in for 4th of July this year.

I also found a Sportsman tin.

It is from Gotham Industries and would have originally come as a set with either one or two thermoses and a matching tote bag to carry it all in.

And I assume you would have packed your beetroot hummus with pita chips and vegan cookies in the tin part. Or your PB&J sandwich with Oreos?

I have seen these in red plaid, but blue plaid? Not so much.

    OK, never.

If you're curious what the original set would have looked like in red you can see it on this Etsy listing.

I also found this little chickadee. Or bluebird. I just sat it on this wooden log candle holder so I could show it to you upright.

1950's vintage GloLight Yule Bird Christmas tree light set

Surprise! It's really a light bulb!

vintage plastic bird with socket - a Christmas tree light set

It's a GloLight Yule Bird light and it was part of a Christmas tree light set made in the 1950's.

I have no idea where his friends flew off to, but I thought he would be cute hanging out in my birdcage turned planter this year.

I won't be plugging it in to see if it works, because we have a little rule in this house that "we" (meaning I) do not plug in old things and then "we" (meaning the husband) doesn't need to use the fire extinguisher.

I had a whole sparks flying out of the electrical socket incident once that "we" don't want to repeat any time soon.

Speaking of electrical things we don't plug in, how cool is this vintage iron I found.

To give you some perspective, it's roughly the sign of a beer can.

There was some conversation on Facebook whether it was a child's iron or a travel iron, but I think we decided it was a child's iron.

It says Sunny Suzy on the butt of it. And has a real live (supposedly working, but again, I'm not going to test it) electrical cord.

If you follow me on Facebook you probably already saw my Facebook LIVE on it, but I thought I'd show it to the ones who missed it or aren't cool enough to want to follow me on Facebook.

Did you see what I did there, I gave you 2 links to Zuckerberg's place so you could follow me if you want. I think that's subliminal advertising. Except I just told you what it was, so it's not so subliminal anymore. Darn it.

Oh and keep in mind it was a live video and I could see people as they pop on to watch the video, so that's why I might have randomly said "Hi" to someone. I'm not nuts. Really, I'm not.

And last but certainly not least, I found this cute green ball-shaped pitcher.

Vintage ball pitcher, possibly a Hall water pitcher

There are no markings on it, so not sure who made it, but it looks an awful lot like the Hall Water pitchers.

Did you find anything special this weekend?

Recent vintage thrift store finds including Hall ball pitcher, Sunny Suzy vintage child's toy iron and thermoses to add to the collection.

Ok, I love the bird bulb! And, I also have the exact same potting table you took the photos on! Mine is on a covered patio area and while I use for the purpose intended, I've also used it as a buffet for food and have put a plastic tub in one side full of ice with cold drinks. Do you do anything special with yours?

That was originally in the basement at my mom's house and she had it setting next to the washing machine to fold stuff on. It was really rusty and yucky looking when I brought it my house though, so I cleaned up the enamel top and painted the legs. I only kept it on the porch for one summer and now it's in my garage as an "indoor potting bench" holding my extra pots and bushel baskets I use for porch decor.

I love your finds, Pam! Fun shopping! I have never seen the blue plaid either, but I love it.
And since I am older than dirt, I played with an iron like that...along with wood burners, whittling knifes, and every other dangerous toy there was. I had a great childhood.

Oh, I had forgotten about wood burning irons! My brother had one of those and we burnt our initials in all sort of things.

I DID find something this weekend. I'm glad you asked. It is a small McCoy planter, and it is a gorgeous color of pale green-blue. It has a few chips, but the guy told me it is from the 30s or 40s. I don't care much about that, but I do love the color and that it's small. And sweet. I wish I could show you, but you could catch my blog. It will be published on Thursday: https://wcaticus8.blogspot.com/

Isn't that funny. At first I thouht it was one of those plastic birds you'd put in a parakeet cage to keep the parakeet company.

A:Wolverine Supply & Manufacturing Co., founded in Pittsburgh in 1903, introduced its Sunny Suzy "girl" toys in 1928. Various models of the Sunny Suzy electric iron, which plugged in but warmed only slightly, were first made in the early 1930s. Your Model No. 29, with its original box and tag, would sell for about $30-$50.

Well, I like all your finds, and especially enjoyed seeing you on video. Most of the time I don't want to do videos b/c most of the time I look totally washed out from no makeup. Cute little iron, and interesting reading the comments above about it. Your other finds are also pretty neat. I like the tin box. I found a lot over the last couple of weeks.

I'm glad it was found to be a child's toy. They taught kids that ironing would be really fun. I couldn't imagine an adult who would think "yes, that's exactly what I need is a teeny tiny iron so I can spend a lot more ironing, Hooray!'

      It sure is cute, though.
